Nutritional compound made from pomegranate to prevent colorectal cancer

A Spanish company engaged in the production of pomegranate juice and derivatives has developed an innovative nutritional compound with preventative effects for colorectal cancer. The product is obtained from pomegranate peel, membranes & seeds, but not grain, making it suitable for diabetics. The product is rich in fibre and antioxidants. The company is looking for companies/research institutes to reach license agreements. However they are open to technical cooperation for further developments.


Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in men and the second most common cancer in women. Almost 55% of these cases occur in more developed regions. The highest estimated age-standardized incidence rates (per 100 000 population) are in Australia/New Zealand (44.8 and 32.2 cases in men and women, respectively), and the lowest are in western Africa (4.5 and 3.8 cases in men and women, respectively). It is estimated that 70% of colorectal cancers are preventable only with dietary and nutritional measures. Nowadays, the main nutritional preventive strategy against colorectal cancer is the consumption of fibre. However, a large number of scientific studies are looking for new natural products that could act as colorectal cancer preventive.

The Spanish company with a large expertise in the production and marketing of products derived from pomegranate fruit (Punica granatum) has developed a nutritional compound derived from pomegranate with a preventive effect of the colorectal cancer. The innovative product is made from three elements of the pomegranate fruit that are rich in antioxidants; in particular peel, internal membranes and seeds. The developed nutritional compound presents a high antioxidant potential. It contains extractable polyphenols (PE) and non-extractable polyphenols (PNE), whose synergy gives to the product a significant preventive effect against colorectal cancer. In addition, this nutritional compound has high fibre content with antioxidant bioactive compounds, so the product offers the benefits of both the fibre and the antioxidants.

In particular, recent studies suggest that ellagic acid (PNE) and its metabolites called urolitins, present in the pomegranate compound developed, can contribute to the prevention of colorectal cancer by modulating the expression of multiple genes of epithelial cells that line the colon, after the ingestion of high concentrations in the diet. The innovative composition of the developed compound gives a significant preventive effect for colorectal cancer.

The Spanish company has applied for a Spanish patent and it is mainly interested in licensing this technology. However, they are also open to technical cooperation agreements to found new applications of the product.

- Finally the invention allows the valorization of by-products from pomegranate juice production.
