Summary

A private technology center from Spain has developed an innovative and more efficient machine vision system for counting people in enclosures with access control. The system detects the passage of people and gives the cumulative number of them in every moment. Furthermore, the system allows the calculation of people who have been in and out of the control area, and the storage of images for later viewing. Description

The Spanish technology center, specialized in optical and imaging technologies, has great experience in providing advanced technology services and developing RTDI projects in cooperation with other technology and research centers, universities and private enterprises. Whereas growing security needs make it necessary to have better access control systems, this organization has developed a machine vision system with high accuracy for counting people. This machine vision system is based on images of depth and motion detection.

How does this machine vision system work? From depth sensing cameras located above the inspection areas composed images of the different level surfaces with volumetric information are achieved, so that all the motion is detected. Each camera is equipped with an infrared sensor and covers and controls the movement of people in its respective inspection area. The processing unit associated with each camera implements computer vision tracking algorithms, analyzes each person´s movement pattern and monitors the movement of people. So that, it is uniquely determined the direction of each person crossing the inspection areas individually. This information is sent to a central server via the communication network (Ethernet TCP/IP), which performs a balance between all inputs and outputs in the enclosure and provides the traffic statistics and the current occupation/capacity data in real time, alarms for access slots not allowed, etc. Statistics, configuration, alarms and warnings are accessible through an interface device.

The main features of this machine vision system are:

- Real-time counting, in both directions of traffic (entrance and exit) simultaneously,
- Easy installation and integration: it does not require any complicated calibration,
- It registers the date and time of each entry/exit in each inspection area,
- It works with images of the visible and the infrared spectrum,
- All light conditions: it operates in any lighting conditions, even darkness,
- High precision: it detects people regardless of their height within the range of work,
- It is not affected by obstacles or fixed elements in the inspection area,
- It generates traffic and capacity statistics at configurable intervals,
- It makes a count of people respectful with the Spanish law on protection of personal data (among the EU countries, Spain has some of the strictest legislation on personal data protection),
- It issues configurable alarms when reaching certain thresholds of current capacity. The thresholds can be set in ranges of occupation.

Beyond the commercialization with technical assistance of this product, the center is offering its technological services on optical technologies to companies and other organizations that have to manage facilities with large entrances and high people transit (i.e.: airports, railway/bus stations, stadiums, public buildings, commercial areas, etc.). Consequently, the technology center offers services agreements to facilities management companies and other organizations interested in integrating optical technologies to their processes.

Advantages and Innovations

This machine vision system presents significant improvements over other people counting systems already on the market. 

- In comparison with systems based on photoelectric/infrared barriers, thermal images, traditional vision (normal surveillance cameras, etc.) and carpets with pressure sensors, this machine vision system makes a much more accurate counting of people and minimizes counting errors that the aforementioned systems make when crowds.
- In comparison with the aforementioned systems and even compared with systems using the same technology (depth sensing cameras, infrared sensors, etc.), the price of this machine vision system is cheaper,
- In comparison with the based on photoelectric/infrared barriers system, this machine vision system can count people in both directions of traffic (entrance and exit) simultaneously,
- In comparison with the traditional vision system, this machine vision system can operate in any lighting conditions, even darkness,
- In comparison with the thermal images system and carpets with pressure sensors, the installation of this machine vision system is easier and its maintenance is cheaper.
