A research team of the Czech university focusing on mechanics, strength and flexibility of materials have developed a seat with adjustable pressure profile. The technology allows controlling the hardness of a seat's cushioning using the electro-pneumatic feedback circuit. The university is looking for partners interested in further research and development and for companies interested in production under a license agreement. Technical cooperation and license agreements are sought.


Researchers from the Czech university have developed a seat with adjustable pressure profile.

The technology offered is based on research in the field of vibration-isolation and comfort of a passenger car. It allows controlling the hardness of a seat's cushioning using the electro-pneumatic feedback circuit. It helps decreasing transmission of vibration to the passenger’s back from the vehicle, thus increasing passenger’s comfort.

Although there are solutions on the market for luxury cars (air-conditioned and / or massage seats etc.), such solutions are expensive. The technology being offered also allows utilizing of automatic regulation in order to achieve a gradual periodic pressure change in the distribution of specific pressures between the occupant and the seat even without the passenger being aware of it. It helps to reach a better blood circulation in the legs.
This is realized by incorporating the pneumatic vibration isolation element into the seat. Such solution allows changing the stiffness of the seat cushion by inflating or deflating air from the element. Simple electro-pneumatic circuit which ensures control of pressure in the seat contact zone between seat and a person comprises of a miniature compressor, 2 pneumatic valves, pneumatic bladder and an electronic control unit. The pressure in pneumatic bladder is changed on user’s request, which influences pressure distribution in a contact zone. The system allows continual change of the pressure peak in a range of tens of percent. Electro-pneumatic feedback circuit ensures quick response to the user‘s request, manual control is simple and very easy to use. A seat e.g. in the car can welcome user with a soft mode and later harden automatically with increasing time.
Design enables the surface shape of the seat to stay unchanged and retains the original ergonomic design, while only the dynamic properties are affected; namely transmission of vibrations from the vehicle to the passenger and the pressure distribution in the contact zone of the seat.

The controlling system allows setting fixed stiffness characteristics or tries to keep constant average pressure in the contact area. The system responds automatically to the change of the passenger‘s position on the seat. First experimental results showed prolonged time of comfortable sitting and reduction of blood congestion in lower limbs of the sitting person.

Such solution can be applied in all types of vehicles and has been tested in the seats for passenger cars. The researchers wishing to sell the licence for the proven technology based on a licensing agreement.

Thanks to simple construction, compact size and versatile design, the system of pneumatic spring element may also find its use in different medical applications. Technology can be modified and applied in various areas of human activities where long-time sitting or lying is inevitable.

Continuous pressure change improves conditions for blood circulation. Hence it has potential for increase of travelling comfort, reducing tiredness from long journeys and pain from contusion.

For example, there is a risk of the pressure sores for disabled people in a wheelchair or long-term bedridden patients. Another type of risk is the risk of untimely tiredness while driving, which can result in the prolongation of the reaction time and increases probability of a car accident. In these days it is a common thing to adjust a car seat to an individual need with back rest inclination, height of the seat or lumbar support. The offered solution can solve some of these problems.

So the researchers also investigate applications of the technology in wheelchairs and hospital beds, where fixed pressure in the contact zone can cause significant health complications. That’s why further joint development and adaptation of the offered technology to such specific needs is also an option for cooperation. Technical cooperation agreement is sought for this option.
