Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA): Implementing innovation in Mediterranean Agro-food chains by smallholders and SMEs

Country of Origin: Spain
Reference Number: RDES20180305001
Publication Date: 6 March 2018

Summary

A Spanish University and a Cyprus company are developing a proposal for a secure platform for the tracking of all processes suffered by agro-food products, along their life cycle. This platform will guarantee the integrity of the information registered and will share it with all actors through the value chain. The consortium is searching for producers (SMEs) from Algeria, Israel, Jordan, Tunisia, Turkey, Morocco, Egypt and Lebanon.

Description

Best practices, climate and raw materials have led to unparalleled food products in the Mediterranean area (wine, olive oil, cheese, etc.). The added value of these products lie in the quality of the product and the procedures applied to obtain the final outcome. To ensure the highest standards of quality along the life cycle of the product, and highlight the properties and value of the food produced within this rich area, the correct handling of raw materials needs to be guaranteed, not only by the producers in its origin, but also by all actors implied along the value chain of the product throughout the proper treatment of the product.

To this aim, a Spanish university together with a Cyprus company are developing an horizontal platform for the monitoring and tracking of all processes suffered by agro-food products, along their value chain, from the origin to the client. This platform will incorporate DLT – Distributed ledger technologies (such as distributed acyclic graphs or blockchain) to guarantee the integrity and “resilience” of the information registered. The information will be gathered by the platform via: human actors (e.g., farmer’s field book), the involved companies’ management software (e.g., ERP), and new installed internet of things (IoT) sensors in the process (e.g., transport temperature, pesticide…), being available for all stakeholders in the value chain.

As a result, the final product will be valorised by means of total transparency, and at the same time, the information gathered will enable the extrapolation of the best practices from one part of the Mediterranean to another by means of machine learning techniques. This will allow the responses to some questions to lead to a best management of the resources in a specific geographical area and will help to address some market issues, highlighting the products and characteristics that final clients demand, helping to improve the performance and monetization of the production.

The consortium is currently developing a proposal to participate in PRIMA programme - The Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (Call: Section 1 – Agro-food Value Chain 2018). The deadline is already given at the end of the description and the link is already given in a later section.

The consortium is coordinated by a Spanish university with an extensive experience in international funding programmes and with a wide background in intelligent systems such as multi-agent systems, ambient intelligence, case-based reasoning systems, wireless sensor networks, distributed artificial intelligence, information security, distributed ledger technologies, web services, smart data, IoT and cloud computing. This partnership is also integrated by a Cyprus company expert in the development of biosensors, IoT and biological research applied to offer innovative solutions for health and food-safety and a Spanish wine producer.

The consortium is searching for agro-food producers (SMEs) from Algeria, Israel, Jordan, Tunisia, Turkey, Morocco, Egypt and Lebanon to join the consortium and identify specific problems in their activities that can be addressed through this innovative solution. They will also participate as demonstrators of the technology and will help to define new tools to incorporate as vertical solutions of this platform.

EOI deadline – 26th March 2018
